Abstract
In recent decades there has been an increasing awareness of the role of the cricopharyngeus muscle in disorder of swallowing.
Failure of temporal incoordination of cricopharyngeal relaxion during pharyngeal contraction results in dysphagia. Aspiration with broncopulmonary infection and progressive malnutrition are frequently present.
Dysfunction of the cricopharyngeal muscle is a manifestation of numerous disorders affecting any level of the neuromuscular axis to the cervical esophagus.
The most common cause is cerebrovascular disease.
We experienced the three cases of cricopharyneal achalasia and report these cases with the review of literature. (Korean J Oto-laryngol 39 : 2, 1996)
